Whereas Jack and Mariah Summerall lived as slaves in Appling County, And whereas their freedom from slavery came as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the defeat of the Confederate armed forces in 1865;
Whereas their slave labor contributed tremendously to the economic development of Appling County without them or their descendants of slavery deriving any direct benefits from their slave labor;
Whereas many of Jack and Mariah Summerall descendants continue to live and make significant social, economic, and cultural contributions to the Appling County community; And whereas the Jack Summerall Family Gathering has supported the Appling County community for 52 consecutive years;
Whereas, the Appling County Commission voted to approve the erection of a Confederate monument on the courthouse grounds; And whereas a Confederate monument on the courthouse grounds is a divisive symbol, not representing the goodwill and unity of the Appling County citizens, And whereas the courthouse should be a symbol of justice and equality for all citizens, And whereas it is an affront to the African American citizens of Appling County and to the United States as a whole;
Therefore, we submit the following resolution in protest against the Appling County commissioners permitting the placement of the Confederate monument on the Appling County courthouse lawn honoring the institution of slavery and those who fought to uphold it;
We resolve that this Confederate monument not be placed on any Appling County public property;
Be it resolved that this resolution represents the Summerall Family Gathering disapproval of the commissioner’s lack of sensitivity, respect and concern for the African American citizens of Appling County;
Be it further resolved that if the Appling County Commission do not rescind their approval to allow placement of this Confederate monument on the courthouse lawn, the Summerall Family Gathering will seriously reflect on it’s continued financial support to this Appling County community.
