A brief history and pictures of our parents, Washington and Beatrice Stevens.
First Generation
Washington and Beatrice Stevens were wed in Holy Matrimony on September 19, 1907 and unto this union nineteen children were born. Of the nineteen born there were three sets of twins and a set of triplets, a set of twins and the triplets did not survive infancy. This fruitful couple raised the remaining fourteen and two grandchildren to adulthood. While in Georgia the family lived in Baxley and later in Surrency until Washington was in an altercation with a white man. Fearful of retaliation on his family, Washington wisely left Georgia and settled his family in Daytona Beach, Florida. Beatrice was very family oriented and organized the Summerall Family Gathering united the descendants of her grandparents, Jack and Mariah Summerall. Jack and Mariah Summerall were not only Beatrice's grandparents they also were slaves on an Appling County plantation. Washington Stevens (Jr), was born September 11, 1886 in Darien, Georgia. He died April 22, 1951 in Daytona Beach, Florida at the age of sixty-four. Beatrice Sharpe-Stevens was born November 20, 1892 in Baxley, Georgia. She died January 8, 1965 in Daytona Beach, Florida at the age of seventy-two.

Ondra Stevens

Ondra was born in Baxley, GA and at the age of four, moved with his family to Surrency, GA of Appling County. During his lifetime Ondra lived in Brunswick and Savannah, GA and Daytona, FL. He worked various jobs but enjoyed a reputation as a "Head Waiter." He accepted his position as "Big Brother" and "Head of the Stevens Family" by assisting family members in getting jobs in the restaurant industry. Many people received training from this stable, friendly, and generous family member. He served in the armed forces for more than two year. He was joined in Holy Matrimony to the former Saddie Reid in Brunswick, GA. The descendants of Ondra Stevens are Gloria Brock, Evelyn Sherman, Lachico Fenderson, Jesse Stevens, and Robert Stevens.

Grovenor Stevens

Grovenor is the second child to Washington and Beatrice Stevens. He was born in Baxley, GA of Appling County. He is married to the former Miss Lenora Williams and they are the proud parents of three sons. Grovenor now resides with his wife Lenora in Miami, FLA. It is said that Grovenor looks more like his father than any of his other brothers and sisters. He has a sense and when he is around, there is never a dull moment. The descendants of Grovenor Stevens are Melvin, Grovenor Jr., and Carey.

Dalton Stevens

Dalton, the third child of Washington and Beatrice Stevens was a beautiful baby who grew up to be a handsome man. He was born in Surrency, GA but traveled a lot as he happily worked in the hotel business. As a waiter, his swiftness, showmanship in handling trays, and his winning personality were qualities that kept him employed. He enjoyed traveling, meeting people, and helping others. He was employed for six years with the Royal American Shows. There are no known descendants of Dalton Stevens.

Mareline Colson

Mareline is the fourth child and first daughter born to Washington and Beatrice Stevens. She was born in Surrency, GA of Appling County. She completed the School of Beauty Culture and owned and operated her own beauty shop for 15 years in Savannah, GA. In addition to her success as businesswoman, she has a beautiful contralto voice, which she shared as a soloist and choir member of the First Bryan Baptist Church and Sidney A. Jones Funeral Chorus both of Savannah, GA. She participated in the Civil Rights Movement. Although Mareline was left blind after unsuccessful surgeries to cure the glaucoma, she remained active and attended conventions and maintained her independence for many years. The descendants of Mareline Colson are Tippin and Eugene Mosley, and Albert H. Dean.
Herman Stevens

Herman was the fifth child born to Washington and Beatrice Stevens. He was born in Surrency, GA of Appling County. Norris Stevens migrated from GA to Norwalk, CT where he presently resides. Norris and his departed wife, Evelyn Stevens owned and operated the Public Liquor Mart. He is highly respected in the Norwalk area and where as his older sibling, Ondra was the big brother of the South, he was the big brother of the North. He is calm, deep thinking and happy. He desires everyone around him be happy and he tries to make everyone feel welcome in his home. Norris is an expert in arranging parties and outings for his family and friends. Norris is also a connoisseur in preparing foods. He is a member of the Male Chorus at his church. He holds the distinction of having nurtured the first attorney and judge in the family. His son, Barry, wrote in a previous family booklet "To my father... the last name on my law degree came from you and that makes me proud!" What a wonderful tribute from a son to a father. The descendants of Norris Stevens are Norris Stevens, Jr., Barry Stevens, Craig Stevens, and Marcia Harper.

Ceaser was born in Surrency, Georgia, near Baxley, where he learned to chip boxes. He spent much of his time hunting and trapping wild game. Ceaser left home at an early age but eventually came to Daytona Beach where he enlisted in the CC Camp. He served a tour in Guam during World War II. With only a second grade education, he enrolled in Bethune Cookman College Vocational School and obtained a diploma in auto mechanics. Ceaser and his lovely wife Jessie Mae have lived in Daytona for over forty years and are well respected in the community. To this union, four children were born. He is also deemed a "Godfather" of sorts as he help to meet the needs of his family and neighbors any way possible. Since he provides financial assistance many refer to him as the Banker. He is one of the few people in Daytona can cast a huge fishing net similar to the net that Jesus' disciples to feed the multitudes. Ceaser is blessed with a beautiful tenor voice that he has used in a quartet and church choirs. The descendants of Ceaser Stevens are James Briggs, Patricia Washington, Sandra Roach, Peggie Fagins, and Ceaser Stevens Jr.

Merle Anfield

As a child, Merle helped care for her younger siblings, nieces, and nephews during her mother's long illness. She was very active in the church and was a self-taught pianist and organist who played for several churches in her hometown of Savannah, GA. Merle was the first child to graduate from high school at Campbell High School in Daytona Beach, FL. She became a Master Beautician and opened Merle's Beauty Shop. Merle became very active in the Civil Rights Movement and the National Association for the Advancement of Color People (NAACP). The descendants of Merle Anfield are Erie Downing and Ondra Williams.

He loved to sing and stir audiences with his rhythmic talent. He was also an excellent cook and often fed family members delicious soul food dinners at his restaurant in Tampa. Earl served as a cook in the Army and when he was discharged became a superb chef who traveled the East Coast working in some of the finest restaurants. There are no known descendants of Earl Stevens.

During his early years he served as deacon at the Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church. GOD blessed Jesse with a beautiful tenor voice, which he eagerly shares. This GOD given gift opened the door for many performances, including one at Lincoln University in PA when he sang on the LP the Stevens Family cut. Jesse is a gentle, soft-spoken man, a man of peace, a man of smiles, who tries to get along with everyone. The descendants of Jesse Stevens are Junetta Lord, Jesse Stevens, and Michael Stevens.

Dewitt was born in Surrency, GA of Appling County was the thirteenth child born to Washington and Beatrice Stevens. He moved to Daytona Beach, FL at the age of eleven. In 1943 he left home to work in Westport, CT for three years before being drafted into the army. Shortly after his discharge, in 1947, he and Eva Jones united in holy wedlock. To the union were born two sons and two daughters. Dewitt completed his high school education in Norwalk, CT and attended vocational training at Bethune Cookman College. In 1955 he was called by GOD to preach. In 1967, Dewitt went back to school to become a real estate broker and in 1968 he became a field underwriter New York Life Insurance Co. In 1979 he organized the Macedonia Church of Norwalk, CT where he served as the pastor until he retired in 1988. In 1990, he retired from New York Life Insurance Co. Dewitt is enjoying his retirement by traveling between his homes in Connecticut and Florida while investing, playing the piano, and preaching the Word of GOD whenever called upon. The descendants of Dewitt Stevens are Dewitt Stevens, Jr., Carolyn Reid, Norma Carter, and Gary Stevens.

Upon leaving high school, Tippins moved to Norwalk, CT and worked on different jobs. The same year, he enrolled in music school in Bridge Port, CT. Tippins served two years in the US Army, including one year in Korea. He was thrifty, fast an excellent worker, and a quick learner who could always get a job. The marriage to the lovely Alfreda Burke was sealed with the blessing of three sons. The descendants of Mr. Tippins Moseley are Brian Moseley, Ashanti Mali, Ashanti Moseley, and Guy Moseley.

Tharon is an inspiration to the entire family, especially the younger generations and he has accomplished so many firsts in the Stevens Family that he is a true trailblazer. Tharon is quiet, man of sophistication who has made over sixteen trips abroad visiting sixty plus countries and islands. He strives for excellence and encourages those around him to do the same. Tharon Stevens is married to the former Dorothy Williams. The sole descendant of Tharon Stevens is Lavalle Stevens.

Eugene Moseley

Eugene Stevens-Moseley is the son of Mareline Colson and Nathaniel Moseley and the grandson of Washington and Beatrice Stevens who raised him. Eugene was born in Georgia but was reared in Florida.
